This Womans Work (TWW) is a non-profit organization founded specifically to help women improve their economic independence and emotional well-being through an innovative series of programs designed to provide support to women as they work to improve their lifestyle and financial position. Founded by Carla Lane, owner of LaneStaffing, the non-profit was inspired by the needs she saw in her employment business where women were applying for jobs they weren not ready for they did not have the proper clothing or just needed other support to create a better lifestyle for themselves and their family. Inspired by this need, Lane started This Womans Work along with Carlas Closet to help inspire women to continue to improve themselves and the lives of their families with support on their journey from the community.
When you read Carla's biographical sketch, you are likely to think she has always had it easy. You would be wrong.
In 2001, Carla was asking herself, “What did I do wrong?” She was on the brink of a divorce with a two year old daughter to support. She had left most of her possessions, including all furniture, in the house previously shared with a soon to be ex-husband. She had no idea how to move forward with her life. Carla lived in the 4th largest city in the country and her closest relative was over 240 miles away.
It seemed the only solution was to pack up her few belongings and go home to her family in Dallas. Although she was shocked by their response, she knew they were offering great advice. They said, “You can come to visit, but you can’t stay. You have got to make it…not just for you…but for that baby. She is watching.”
Ask this powerhouse of success how she reached the level of being the largest minority woman-owned employment solution in the southwest and she will always cite her core values. As President and CEO of LaneStaffing, she never forgets her overall business strategy:
TWW serves women by referral only. Clients come to use from a diverse group of non-profit and government agencies, homeless shelters, job training programs and domestic violence shelters.
However, program candidates must be interviewed by one of our counselors before being admitted. Once accepted into the program, STEP ONE is to prepare for being employable. TWW promotes confidence and professionalism with career guidance, job search assistance and the chance to acquire technology skills needed for a viable career.
STEP TWO is remaining employed. The stability of continued employment is essential to building a rewarding career. We offer women ongoing support as they successfully transition into the workforce.

Comerica Bank will provide training and seminars on youth money management.
Greater Houston Black Chamber will assist with after-school and weekend activities.
Houston Area Urban League will assist in recruiting mentors and provides facilities for community meetings, activities, fundraising, and transportation.
Houston Independent School District will provide facilities for recreation, student tutors, access to students, and other technical assistance as needed.
LaneStaffing, INC. will help identify and recruit mentors, obtain volunteers’ fingerprints, conduct local criminal background checks, and provide security at youth activities. Additionally, LaneStaffing will provide job training and post-secondary education counseling.
National Black MBA (NBMBA) will assist with mentor training and other positive youth development activities for mentees.
SuperLady Live will provide 2 workers to assist with youth development activities, literacy, services learning projects, and office support.
IronWomen Mentor will provide mentors and volunteer chaperones for field trips and other school sponsored activities.
OPEN will provide workshops and training on pregnancy prevention, infant mortality and morbidity.

Carla Lane, founder of This Woman’s Work (TWW), has been helping people secure employment since 2001. She knows very well the impact of looking good for the interview – and for the new job.
In response to this need, TWW has organized a way for participants to gain confidence from the right outfit. Carla’s Closet provides what a woman needs, down to the accessories, jewelry, shoes, and handbags. From time to time they will include stockings, slips/camisoles, hosiery and tights.
Known globally for their not-for-profit generosity, Dress for Success has been helping women get clothing they need to land a good job since 1997. Sharing their vision of a world where women are economically empowered, we have established a partnership to support additional needs for Dress for Success clients who have completed the curriculum and suiting process.
Approved Dress for Success clients will be referred to Carla’s Closet. (Approval means the client has secured an interview and/or offer.) Once accepted, TWW will schedule a first and second suiting appointment where they will be provided complete outfits for work.
Each “suiting” and interview prep appointment is about 2 hours long. In the first hour, participants select an interview suit with a personal shopper. The second hour, clients participate individually or with a group for a “First Impression” session to prepare for the interview or the fist days at your new place of employment. Clients are also able to earn shopping credit to build their professional wardrobe.
Step one in a woman’s journey to economic independence is preparing herself to become employable. Our programs promote confidence and professionalism by providing women tools to find employment.
Step two is remaining employed. TWW offers women ongoing support as they successfully transition into the workforce, build thriving careers and prosper in the mainstream workplace.
Both of these components are essential for a woman to build a rewarding career and become self-sufficient. We are committed to treating women with respect and dignity to help them reach their fullest potential. Our philosophical roots are grounded in the belief women’s psychological and economic well-being positively influences the community as a whole. We recognize women taking responsibility to control their lives and behaviors affects the quality of life in the family, workplace and ripples out into the entire community.

The Stepping Into Strength (SIS) Mentoring Program builds and develops young girls in the community to become resilient, fearless, educated and empowered. These skills will support them to become women who make self-sustaining decisions to enhance their lives.
SIS and This Woman’s Work (TWW) designed this program to encourage youth to dream beyond their often oppressive conditions of urban life. As an early intervention and prevention service, students from grades 9-12 will be selected for mentoring relationships. These young women will be chosen based on their risk of educational failure, teen pregnancy, truancy and juvenile delinquency.
The vision of SIS is to thrive as a national and global mentorship program dedicated to the enrichment and empowerment of young girls. The program will serve as an avenue of infinite possibilities. Mentees will benefit from exposure to an expanded potential for their lives and what education has to offer them.

The primary focus of This Woman’s Work (TWW) is to provide low-cost training for participants in our programs. TWW has identified many up-and-coming-fields where there are high-growth, high-demand, and good living wage opportunities.
Founded by Carla Lane, CEO of LaneStaffing, TWW makes sure women who need to increase skill sets to make livable wages have a resource to accomplish their goals with low-to-no costs to them.
Corporate partners work with TWW to prepare women for viable work options provided by Lane Staffing and other employment partners.
This Woman’s Work is a foundation for the purpose of offering the no-to-low cost training. In addition, TWW focuses on the outreach, intake, assessment, mentoring and evaluation of participants. We want our clients to know how to qualify for programs like Dress For Success and other partner agency services.
This Woman’s Work relies on financial contributions to achieve these goals. The contributions come from individuals, corporations, government and foundation agencies. We also rely on in-kind donations from companies and volunteers who are committed to helping women take charge
